5. COMMITMENT TO PROJECTS
We require full participation in the development of the project, such that we are able to ensure that the Civil and Structural Engineering elements are both economically and aesthetically integrated into the design solution. Experience gained from similar worldwide projects may be sought, by visiting specific developments if necessary.
Design and Detail
We maintain current state of the art computer design programmes for the analysis of the structural systems. We do not use packages that produce "end result sections and details", but prefer to develop the final detail by the design engineer in conjunction with the architect as applicable to achieve quality designs.
We have particular skills in structural steelwork, this practice being involved with substantial large span steel roofs, including the International Convention Centre, Durban and the King Shaka International Airport-Durban.
We anticipate a close working relationship with the Professional Team at all levels during this stage.
Documentation and Drawings
We approach the production of drawings on a totally C.A.D basis. In this regard, all C.A.D operators are linked for cross transfer of compatible drawings and data, the system being managed by a designated person. We tend therefore to use large capacity paper space storage to work on a complete level, prior to sub-dividing into AO format plotted drawings. We have gained experience in this regard on the I.C.C and KSIA having produced the concrete layouts for the complete ground floor level of some 20 000-sq. meters, together with all Structural Steel drawings for the complex Roof Structure over.
We fully support regular design co-ordinating meetings attended by all professionals, where full communication of all disciplines can take place. The designated partner would attend these meetings.
We are able to provide specifications covering Civil Works, Piling, Lateral Support, Reinforced Concrete, Post Tensioned Concrete, Structural Timber, Structural Steelwork and Coatings.
We would allocate staff to assist as required. This would in particular provide an opportunity for training.
The designated partner would attend site meetings as required.
The appointment of a Resident Engineering may also be appropriate.
6. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION POLICY
Our practice since establishment has followed a committed policy of Affirmative Action, both internally with regard to the employment and advancement of our staff, and externally with regard to our association with Professionals, Contractors and the Community.
Our staff compliment from Partners to Administration level is representative of our Affirmative Action stance and embraces people from historically dis-empowered groups including women.
We aim to be recognised as an efficient and effective Consulting Engineering practice, producing quality design, within the context of the new social structures evolving.
This approach has not been prescriptive to accommodate political pressure but has always been the basic philosophy of the partners.
Application to Our Staff
A 55% shareholding in the Practice and over 50% of our staff are from the "previously disadvantaged sector", and this has been the case since the founding of this practice.
The philosophy of our practice is to involve all staff in the decision making process, and to keep all staff updated in the performance of current projects and technical advancements.
We believe in undergraduate training. We have provided Engineering Training employment to University graduates and technicians to obtain Bachelor of Technology. At present we are training two technicians in our office from the previously disadvantaged sector. We provide in house training on CAD and technical updates, based on improving their overall expertise and thereby creating the potential for equal opportunity advancement.
We are satisfied that this Practice possesses the resources and expertise to make a significant contribution to any predominantly Structural and Civil Engineering Project and add intellectual value to it. We support the concept of working with a team, leading to increased efficiencies. This can also create the opportunity to provide substantial training and accelerated development to the previously disadvantaged sectors of South Africa and Africa.
A proven track record with community based organisations in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Region has also given our Practice a major advantage with regards to community participation in major projects. Having been associated with Durban over many years, extending from the local education and training of the majority of our staff, to our establishment in this City and our associations with Professional Practices, we are committed to assisting the future development of South Africa.
